WHAT'S A COOKIE?
A cookie is a small file that an internet web
site places on your computer's hard drive. This allows the web developer to retrieve
certain information about who you are so that they can "remember" you from a
previous vist, or to customize a web page to your liking. Any type of web page that allows
you to customize your own settings, set-up your own links, etc. is most likely using a
"cookie" file to accomplish this.
The cookie file itself is just a small text
file that the web page can read and extract the information that was placed there from a
prior time you were at the site. Most popular web browsers support cookies, but only if
you tell them to. Therefore, you must "enable" cookie support in your web
browser settings before the cookie files will be placed on your hard drive.
In Microsoft's Internet Explorer, for
instance, you can enable cookie support from the "View" menu, and selecting
"Internet Options." Click on the "Advanced" tab and scroll down to the
Security section. You can check one of three settings for cookies: don't accept any,
accept with a warning message, or accept all without asking.
For Netscape 4.0 users and above (versions 3.04 and below automatically
accept cookies), click on "Edit" then "Prefereces...". In the
"Preferences" dialog box, Click on the "Advanced" option and then
click on either "Accept all cookies" or "Accept only cookies that get sent
back to the originating server". Click "OK".
If your settings already allow cookies you can see what they look like by
searching for a folder on your system called "Cookies" and viewing any of the
files in it with a text editor like Notepad, Write, etc.
Cookies aren't required for the TestTrax Web Site, but we will not be able
to store your login or personal preference information for you.
